Why is sanford called bokey

Sanford is finally getting the respect it deserves. It all happened kinda organically. We only posted the event on facebook and social. We had 30 acts and 6 porches, with all 28 bands playing for free. All of the participating homes were located in the historic district. We totally kicked ass, had over people in attendance and raised some money for charity too.

My brothers were born an raised in Bokey, and that made me feel right at home. Like Like. I always thought the word originated from Sanford being a major stop for boats on the Saint John, and from the word celery, as Sanford was known at one time the capital. I was told that the Saint John was used to flood the celery fields, and I assumed that they called this area a key, which from my understanding was near or actually midway area of Sanford.

I believed that the town people that worked and lived in this area called it Bokey to give a name to their particular home inside Sanford, and since celery was key to the success or jobs for the local people while also the reason for the boats to port, the local people who worked in the celery fields while living in that area started the team Bokey which later became know for all of Sanford. At least this is the explanation I have used to explain it to those that ask, using some history and hersey.

He told me bokey was the name of influential African American that was killed in a local bar many years ago. I was born and raised in Sanford and more specific, Goldsboro…….. Born their in 44 and my brother and sister before me……we lived in the back of the store at South West Road.
